BONE INTERNAL FIXATION DEVICES

Intra-medullar (IM) composite devices (used to align and stabilize fractures) will not only be radiolucent, but will be less likely to require retrieval, and are candidates to adopt both the anti-infective surface technology and the regulated internal release of bone growth factors through nano techniques. Embedded RFI sensor technology could also provide an advantage in monitoring patient progress and the distribution of force during the healing process. Transponders might also prove useful in locating the drill position for the distal screw insertion procedure, where accuracy is currently limited due to fluoroscope visualization. A smart link between the IM rod, to communicate the precise locations of the distal position and the drill for the fixation screw, would improve accuracy and reduce operating time.
