ABOUT

For many years, medical device manufacturers have suspected that the composite materials developed for use in the aerospace and aviation industries might prove superior for use in a wide variety of medical applications. Orthopaedic surgeons, in particular, have looked toward composites as a possible solution to the long-term disadvantages of steel as a material for implant fabrication. What has been missing is a collaborative forum within which to bring highly specialized composites expertise together with bioscientists who are equally experienced in their fields.
CIBOR has been established to provide that critical link between the two industries. Jointly sponsored by Via Christi (one of the largest health systems in the Midwestern U.S.), Wichita State University (home of the National Institute for Aviation Research), and the Kansas Bioscience Authority, CIBOR is located in Wichita, Kansas, a major global market for composite aircraft manufacture. With immediate and continuous access to Wichita’s entrenched composites community, CIBOR is in the best position to research, design, test and bring to market the full spectrum of composite medical devices, ranging from hip and knee implants to bacteria resistant surgical instruments to technologically advanced surgical tables and stretchers and far beyond.
